Hi3798M TV Box Motherboard

Introduction to Hisilicon Hi3798M based 4K UHD H.265 NVR

Not Hi3535 and Hi3536, here we have a 4K UHD H.265 NVR that adopts a Hi3798M processor from Hisilicon. It’s weird, because this SoC is primarily designed for smart TV Boxs or STBs (Set Top Boxs). Apparently, we don’t know much information about this processor because we are in security industry. Let’s dig more info about this processor together in this article.

Based on the datasheet published by Hisilicon, the Hi3798M firstly launched date back to 2014. It’s a Quadcore ARM Cortex A7 CPU which has integrated with powerful GPU to process the graphic. This processor has the capability to handle 4K ultra high definition video, therefore you can find this processor in many 4K TV Boxs. In addition to the 4K UHD resolution, Hi3798M also supports H.265 video compression standard, it supports H.265 Main Profile Level 5.0 High-tier and H.264 BP/MP/HP Level 5.0 hardware video decoding.

In terms of audio decoding, it supports G.711 and MPEG L1/L2, DRA, Dolby Digital/Dolby Digital Plus Decoder-Converter compression standard. Hi3798M has rich peripheral interfaces including 1x 3.0 USB and 3x 2.0 USB ports, 1x 10/100Mbps self-adaptive Ethernet port.

A Hi3798M based NVR can support video streams from megapixel network cameras, the resolution can be 720p, 1080p, 3MP, 4MP, 8MP (4K UHD) and 12MP. It supports 1 channel 4K UHD video playback or 4 channel 1080p FHD video playback simultaneously. The NVR can support H.265 and H.264 video compression standard, it has 1 RCA audio output, and 1 HDMI video output (max. 4K resolution). Included 2 SATA ports to offer maximum 12TB storage capacity.

What's the difference between Hi3798M and Hi3536?

Currently, Hisilicon only has Hi3536 SoC to support H.265 video decoding. Hisilicon Hi3536 is a high-performance 4K*2K processor which is dedicated to video surveillance application. Hi3536 adopts Big.LITTLE architecture design to provide the best performance on video decoding which is 16 channel 1080P simultaneously. Hi3798M is a regular processor can provide limited video processing capability, therefore Hi3798M can only handle fewer video channels. Based on this, Hi3798M can be used in 4CH/8CH/16CH H.265 NVR, while Hi3536 can be used in 16CH/24CH/36CH/64CH NVR.

By the way, Hi3798M only supports 100Mbps Ethernet port, therefore the total incoming bandwidth is limited to this. The Hi3536 supports 1000Mbps Ethernet port to allow incoming bandwidth higher than 256Mbps.
