HLC (Highlight Compensation) vs BLC (Backlight Compensation)

When we check the specifications of analog camera or IP camera, we will see BLC and HLC jargon. Herein we are going to explain these two common glossaries.

HLC stands for highlight compensation, camera can detect the strong spots (the over-exposure portion of image), then reduce the brightness of the strong spots to improve the overall images. This function is designed to allow camera capture vehicle plate license.

BLC stands for back-light compensation, this technology is designed to optimize the brightness of images through using digital signal processing. Backlight compensation working theory is splitting the whole images into difference regions, and making separate exposure for the regions. Most of security cameras feature with this technology will shutdown extremely high and low level light while maintaining normal lighting conditions for the objects in focus. Hence, through back light compensation (BLC) function, a security guard can clearly identify the object in focus even when there's excessive light coming from behind the object. For example, a person is standing in front of a window or entering through an outside door. When viewed using a regular camera, the person entering through the door will appear silhouetted.
