How to install and connect IP cameras?

We have to admit that traditional cctv systems are outdated, and nowadays people chose the advanced IP surveillance systems to secure their premises. Whatever it's typical residential or a large parking lot, the advanced IP surveillance system can not only deliver ultra high-definition (HD) resolution images, but also minimizing the total security budget while increasing flexibility and hassle-free installation, as well as less maintenance.

Composition of the IP camera system

IP camera: This is the front-end image capturing device, and it's the eye of whole surveillance system. IP camera can capture megapixel resolution images and encoding inside with powerful signal processing processor. It has built-in embedded system which to manage the working of each components. It can perform image capturing, encoding, event management, motion detection, and other advanced features. Additionally, it has built-in web server, can allow user to access camera for live view and control via anywhere with internet.

Video transmission: The pathway for video transmission. IP camera can output the video streaming from a standard RJ45 Ethernet port. The pathway can be a single Cat5 cable. For most IP cameras, the camera can connect to a network switch or a PoE splitter. For PoE compatible cameras, they can connect to PoE switch directly.

Storage and back-end CMS: For the storage of the video, the network video recorder is the ideal device to record the video footage from network. Moreover, users also can choose to use the free video management software (VMS) to record and access the IP camera via any computers. The VMS can allow user to config, access, manage the multiply IP cameras, and also recording the video footage which stored in your computer's HDD.

Traditional connection

Traditional IP camera with at least two ports; the RJ45 port and Power Connector. For the properly working of the traditional IP camera, you need use a separate power (typically it's DC12V) either from power distribution box or a AC/DC adapter. Before use the IP camera, you need to know the working voltage, therefore can choose appropriate power supply. Using the Cat5 cable connect between IP camera and network switch/NVR (if it has many ports).

PoE connection for PoE IP camera

If you want to setup a new IP camera system, you'd better to choose the PoE solution. The PoE solution can reduce the installation cost, also decrease the hassle works during installation process, it's reliable and less maintenance technology, working with your existing network infrastructure. PoE switch is the essential device in this connection, and power on the PoE switch, then link the PoE IP camera to PoE switch with a single Cat5 cable, it's done.

PoE IP camera connects to PoE Switch

PoE switch has many channels such as 4CH, 8CH, 16CH. More channels, means it can support more quantities of IP cameras. Please note that majority PoE switches adopt IEEE802.2af-2003 is the standard of PoE, and it can supplies up to 15.4W of direct current (DC) electrical power to each end devices. Definitely, this power capacity can't provide efficient power supply to PoE compatible IP PTZ dome camera. For PoE IP PTZ dome camera, you need to use specific PoE switch which can deliver high power to allow PTZ camera working properly.

PoE connection for Non-PoE IP camera

Traditional IP camera doesn't support PoE, but user still can benefit the cost effective and flexibility of PoE technology through utilizing the PoE switch and PoE splitter.

The PoE splitter can split the power and data from Cat5 cable from PoE switch. In summary, the PoE splitter can allow user to install non-PoE devices (Non-PoE IP camera) without near to a power outplet. With help of the PoE splitter, the Non-PoE IP camera can take advantages from PoE network solution. The PoE splitter also can provide short circuit protection and offering reliable performance.
