What's PoE IP Surveillance Camera?

PoE IP surveillance camera is the traditional IP camera with added PoE module, which allow camera to utilize the Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology for reducing the network cost and increasing the flexibility of whole network system. With help of the PoE, the installation of IP camera becomes much easier.

What's PoE (Power over Ethernet)?

Power Over Ethernet technology started in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone systems, and dated back to 2000, Cisco firstly established the world PoE system. Power over Ethernet is an advanced new technology for wired Ethernet local area network that permits the electrical power can transmit through Ethernet cable to support proper operation of connected IP devices (Powered devices). With this technology, it can minimize the number of cables that required for each of IP devices, because the Ethernet cable can not only transmit data, but also the power to IP devices. Additionally, the PoE can provide long cable run up to 100 meters (330ft) and deliver 12W of galvanically isolated power.

What's the advantages of PoE IP camera?

As we know, to setup a traditional LAN network IP surveillance system, it requires not only use the Ethernet cable, but also need to separate power cable as well as power supply. Typically, the power cable doesn't exit in network infrastructure for both residential and commercial buildings, setup of traditional network for IP surveillance system becomes difficult job also requires hassle maintenance. Now PoE technology is another option, the PoE technology can bring many benefits, Now the PoE technology has brought to network everywhere, and it offers many benefits including offer centralized and secure solution, also provide low-cost powering to network end devices, and by adopting PoE technology, users can save huge amount of money in installation costs.

The Power over Ethernet (PoE) standards

IEEE802.2af-2003 is the standard of PoE, and it can supplies up to 15.4W of direct current (DC) electrical power to each end devices. IEEE 802.3at-2009 PoE standard also known as PoE+ or PoE plus, provides up to 25.5 W of power. The 2009 standard prohibits a powered device from using all four pairs for power.

How to use the PoE IP camera?

For properly working of PoE IP camera, you need to use the PoE switch. PoE switch is a network switch that has power over Ethernet injection built-in. It's essential device if you want to use the PoE IP cameras or want to setup a PoE Ethernet LAN (local area network). Simply connect the PoE featured IP cameras to the swich as normal, the swich can automatically detect if they are PoE compatible, and enable power automatically.

Additionally, the PoE switch also can work with Non-PoE compatible IP cameras with extra device - PoE splitter. The PoE splitter can be installed non-PoE compatible end IP cameras. It can split the power and data from Ethernet cable. It has plug-and-play features, provide standard DC power with DC connector, and data via RJ45.
